Nachman had the ability to see the subject of the military and security beyond their literal meanings.  He regarded the seccurity of the State of Israel as part of a greater and more complex system of creating a new state.  He definitely thought that Diplomacy is part of this system, and served in our mission to the United Nations, on the other hand he gave the direction and scope to our great structures of Assistance in the Defence area to Developing countries.  When he headed these activities on the Defence side, he found a great collaborator to his ideas in the person heading the International Relations Departtment in the Foreign Office – Mr. Ehud Avriel.

On the first memorial to Nachman,16.8.78, Ehud Avriel said:
“Nachman was not asked to serve among the People most dear to his life.  Since the day I met him Nachman was striving to work among the Jewish People in the Diaspora.  He wanted to bring the light of Zionism and its spirit.  His heart blazed for the work he envisioned as the continuation of what he had done until then, and ached with the disappointment of not being let to do so.  But when he turned into action among the Developing Countries, he did not do it because he was disappointed in another area.  He turned to this task, which was in its initial state then, with this full mind and might, using all the skills and talents God endowed him with.

When we first embarked on this mission, he used to ask himself “how can I contribute more  for the benefit of Israel in this new task?”  He knew, not less than others, to offer solutions to the eternal problems of Israel , but his solutions were always more original and more daring.  Only few knew, like him, to make advantage of new opportunities, and find new ways how to use them.  And so he carried into the new task this new spirit of the IDF, which itself was still young and  still being formulated.

He  became the main advocate and bearer of the message of the Nachal, Gadna, Women Corps, Volunteers, and also training of Paratroopers and pilots, of Navy and Infantry, and of the legendary spirit and heritage of the IDF “follow me”.  He carried this spirit into  many foreign lands – in Africa , Asia and South America .  His brain was feverish with original ideas.  Always initiating, testing, doubting, and again testing new ideas.  His keen thoughts were always on the main question of how to  enhance the power of Israel and its influence in the world.  Unitl his last days he was endowed with his unique characteristic : he never took himself too seriously, and thus was able to judge , test, initiate and arouse.  But we, his colleagues, took him very seriously, and followed him in the execution of his favourite strategic concepts.  In Siungapore and Columbia , in Uganda and Zair, and many other places.  An echo of what was done there can still be heard, and the results can be seen.

For me Nachman was a true partner in hard and dedicated work.  But more than that.  He was like a fountain of ideas, dreams, acts of daring and risks .  Sara’s and his home, till his very last days in New York , and through many turbulent years in Israel , a haven of optimism and encouragement, warm and friendly.  In the midst of life, our brother Nachman, was taken from us.
